Sponsored by the Northern Territory Government and Athletics Northern Territory, the Mitchell Street Mile is an iconic Darwin event that in terms of excitement, even gives Friday night on Mitchell Street a real run for its money! It’s all happening on Sunday 18th September, and the day is set to be packed full of fun and hilarity! A number of the team here at Ray White Bayside have been a part of the event in the past, and a few of us are planning on being involved this year as well!
The Mitchell Mile attracts running enthusiasts both local and visiting, as well as thousands of spectators, who enthusiastically line the streets for the entire mile (which is just over 1.6 kilometres in the new scale!). Runners will run up and down Mitchell Street and compete for the coveted Mitchell Miler title!
The Mile route commences with the marshalling on the lawns right near Parliament House and the start line will be at the junction of Mitchell and Bennett Streets, just outside the Deck Bar. From here, the race will travel along Mitchell Street, through the McLachlan Street corner, before turning around and running back along Mitchell Street and finishing at the location outside the Deck Bar where it all started.
The cheering of the crowds really sets the stage for an amazing event where people can showcase their sporting prowess in the serious races or costuming and comedy skills, which definitely apply to the fancy dress mixed run! In total, there are nine runs scheduled for the day.
This year, for the first time, the Mitchell Mile will start with a Cycling Criterium which will kick off at 1.30pm. Riders will tackle the same course, just on their bicycles. The other events will run throughout the day, right up until the conclusion of the event at 7pm.
The event is open to the public for entry and the various race categories cater for a wide range of individuals. You can register for the event online and late entries will be accepted on Saturday 17th September. Just follow the instructions here: http://mitchellstreetmile.com.au/event-details/entry-fees/.
