One of Darwin’s most iconic events is about to roll around for a 42nd time!

By Korgan Hucent

We’re talking here of course about the famous Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta!  The very first regatta was held in Darwin way back on the 16th July 1974, and although none of the team here at Ray White Bayside can quite remember that inaugural event, we certainly do have our fair share of fond memories from beer can regattas gone by!

This year’s Beer Can Regatta will be held on Sunday 17th July from 10am until 5pm at Mindil Beach.  It’s sure to be a fantastic family day with a massive line-up of fun events and activities which will include, in addition to the regatta:

  • Tug of War for adults and kids
  • Sandcastle competitions
  • Kayaking competitions
  • Kids running races

In short, there will be plenty of beach and water events for people of all ages, and food and drinks will be available on the day.  Bar facilities will also be available, however due to licensing conditions, BYO alcohol is not permitted.  Added to the great line-up of events, the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets will be trading all day!  Best of all, to come along, entry is free!

We also have it on good authority that it still isn’t too late to build a boat and participate in the events.  You can check out all the essential details about building a boat by visiting this link: http://beercanregatta.org.au/node/15.

You just need to ensure you fill out the registration form and pay your $50 registration fee by 9am on the day of the Regatta.  All proceeds will go towards worthy causes, including Down Syndrome NT, Cancer Council NT and Mindil Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

For more information about this exciting, one-of-a-kind event, visit the Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta website at: http://beercanregatta.org.au/.
