Why you should consider living in Larrakeyah

By Korgan Hucent

Sandwiched just nicely between the busyness of Darwin’s colourful CBD and the tropically picturesque Cullen Bay, Larrakeyah is one of Darwin’s oldest and most sought-after suburbs. Whether you want to buy or rent, this is the perfect spot for suburban life in the heart of the city.

Just a walk away from town, Cullen bay, and not to mention Mindil Beach (did someone say a weekly trip to the markets?) and the George Brown Botanic Gardens, it really is a great place to live with everything you need right on your doorstep.

Larrakeyah is named after the Indigenous language group that occupied much of the Darwin coastal area since before the European settlement. Starting with the creation of the Botanic Gardens, Larrakeyah originated in the 1800’s but was not established as a residential area until 1911, for senior public servants.

A whole century later, Larrakeyah is now an interesting and thriving suburb, which is home to the Larrakeyah Barracks and a dense and ever increasingly diverse population of long time locals, indigenous and transient residents, who come to work during the Dry Season.

From old classic houses (the very first built after Cyclone Tracy) to newly built apartments, this suburb has it all, and makes it a popular spot for both home owners and renters.

Call into the Ray White Bayside office to have a chat and see what is on offer in the area. You could become part of the popular Larrakeyah community and come to experience for yourself why this suburb is one of Darwin’s best-loved.
