Territory Day is almost here (1st July)…and that means FIREWORKS!

By Korgan Hucent

If like some of our sales and rental clients here at Ray White Bayside real estate, you are new to Darwin then you’re in for a treat this Wednesday 1st July when the Territory celebrates its very own day: Territory Day!  It is the one and only day in the Northern Territory where everybody can celebrate with fireworks.  Chances are you’ve seen the signs advertising fireworks sales?  Well Wednesday is the day you can get in on the fun!

Territory Day celebrates the anniversary of self-governance that was granted to the Territory by the Federal Government in 1978.  From 6pm, anybody can legally set off fireworks in the Northern Territory up until 11pm on 1st July.  Outside of these times, fireworks must not be used and any unused fireworks must be surrendered to Worksafe NT by midday on 2nd July.  As fun as fireworks can be, always ensure you use them safely and follow the instructions and guidelines publicised here at http://www.territoryday.nt.gov.au/how-we/.

If fireworks aren’t your thing and you don’t want to celebrate with your own pyrotechnic display, you can check out any one of the celebrations organised for the day by visiting http://www.territoryday.nt.gov.au/.

If like many of our sales and property management clients here at Ray White Bayside real estate, you have dogs, then it’s a good idea to ensure you do all you can to make them feel safe and secure on the night.  Fireworks and dogs don’t tend to go well together, with reports of some dogs breaking chains and scaling high fences in a futile attempt to escape the noise and distress caused by fireworks.  It’s good to ensure your pets are registered, and safe and secure at the time fireworks are occurring.  Play some music or turn the television on, to provide your animals with distraction, diverting their attention from any possible stress.  Always ensure a plentiful supply of water and close windows and doors, to minimise noise from the fireworks.  Ensure as well your pet registration is up-to-date, in the event of an escape.

It’s a day to celebrate what being a Territorian is all about, so enjoy the day and night safely!
